Rafe Esquith
Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire!
Rafe has been called a "modern day Thoreau" by Newsday, "a genius and a saint" by the New York Times and "the most interesting and influential classroom teacher in the United States" by the Washington Post. For over two decades, Esquith has taught fifth-graders at a public school in a Los Angeles neighbourhood which is plagued by guns, gangs and violence. His exceptional classroom at Hobart Elementary - known simply as Room 56 - may be unlike any other in the States. Rafe and his students are the subject of a highly-acclaimed PBS documentary, The Hobart Shakespeareans. In his book, Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire: The Methods and Madness Inside Room 56, Rafe offers an inspiring road map for teachers who care about the future success of children.
